December 31 - TV ALERT!!! Don't forget to watch Katia skate in Brian Boitano's Skating Spectacular on January 1st! The show will be televised on NBC from 4-6 PM EST.

December 16 - Last night at Brian Boitano's show in Las Vegas, Katia performed a routine to Russian folk music and the Petrarch Sonnet ribbon routine. Read the full reviews of the show posted on the Skatefans mailing list:

December 15 - Katia returns to the ice tonight for her first skating performance in over a year! She will be performing at Brian Boitano's Skating Spectacular in Las Vegas, Nevada along with Kristi Yamaguchi, Yuka Sato, Rudy Galindo, and more. The show will be televised by NBC on New Year's Day.

December 15 - The December 24th issue of People magazine includes a Katia update on page 45. Thanks to Mary for sending the paragraph:

"She may be taking two years of from figure skating to raise her two children, Daria, 9, and Elizaveta, 6 months, but you'll still find Ekaterina Gordeeva at the ice rink. On Dec. 8 the Olympic pairs champion (her skating partner, husband Sergei Grinkov, died of a heart attack in 1995) was in Burbank watching Daria take part in her first major competition, an Ice Skating Institute holiday show. Gordeeva, who is not Daria's coach, helped with warm-ups and costume changes, but she sat in the stands like all the other nervous parents when her daughter took to the ice and won two events. Talk about a chip off the old block of ice!"

December 8 - A new Lenox figurine titled Katia's Celebration of Life will be available this spring. The piece depicts Katia performing a layback spin during her Mahler Adagietto tribute to Sergei from February, 1996.

December 8 - Thank you to Jenny for the following information about an upcoming Blades On Ice feature on Katia:

I was just letting Katia fans know that I contacted Blades on Ice last night and asked if they had any news on Katia, they said: "We are looking to set something up with Katia for an upcoming issue" I am excited, just thought I would let Katia fans know, too keep their eyes peeled, they didn't say which issue.

December 8 - Figure skating photographer Kathy Goedeken has posted many G&G photos on her web site, www.kgphotos.com. Several of Kathy's more recent photos of Katia have also been added to a new Stars On Ice slide show here at A Kind of Magic.

November 17 - G&G's competition record has been corrected from the updates made four days ago. The 1983 NHK Trophy results that were obtained from this web site are actually the results from the World Junior Championships. The 1983 Grand Prize SNP results, however, were printed in the February, 1984 issue of Skating magazine and are correct. I apologize for the mistake! <g>

November 13 - Gordeeva and Grinkov's competition record is now a little longer with the addition of results from two competitions in 1983. In the fall of '83, G&G placed fifth at the NHK Trophy in Japan and won the bronze medal at the Grand Prize SNP in Czechoslovakia.

November 12 - The Weekly Features will no longer be updated but I am working on replacements for these sections. The first new section, slide shows, has already been posted with a new set of G&G and Katia photos. Check back occasionally to see new photos posted!

November 6 - Doctors are still investigating the cause of Sergei's death and new articles have been published in the past few days about the continuing research:

November 6 - I apologize for the lack of updates to this site, especially the Weekly Features. The main reason has been a recent bandwidth problem that is causing the site to slow down and I am trying to determine the best solution so please bear with me!

Katia may finally have a skating appearance on her schedule!  The latest issue of Spotlight On Skating magazine includes Katia on the list of confirmed skaters for Brian Boitano's Skating Spectacular show.  This event will take place on December 15th at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas and will be televised by NBC on January 1st.  Thank you to Becky for this information!

The Weekly Features that are usually updated every Tuesday were not updated this week, but check back next week for a new photo and trivia. I had planned on updating these sections as well as wishing Daria a happy 9th birthday on Tuesday, but did not due to the events that unfolded during the day. I would like to offer my sincere sympathies to everyone who has been affected by this tragedy and pray that the many fans and their families in New York City and Washington D.C. are safe.

The tape trading portion of the defunct Ekaterina Gordeeva Fan Forum has been removed and added to A Kind of Magic.  Visit the new Tape Trading Forum to post requests for performances on video tape and other memorabilia!  The forum requires registration but users of the old EGFF can use their previous user name and password.

Although the news is not absolutely confirmed, it looks like Katia may not be skating in Stars On Ice this season. Mary posted this message at the old fan forum:

I wrote an e-mail to Stars On Ice a few days ago regarding Katia and an SOI performance in Houston. This is response I received:

"Houston is currently tentative for next year. We will have our final schedule set in stone by the end of August, so I suggest checking the website at that time. In regards to Katia, she will not be skating in this year's show.

Thanks for your interest."

The current issue of Blades On Ice magazine (August 2001, Tara Lipinski cover) includes the following G&G/Katia content:

• Page 7 - A reader inquires about Katia's low profile during her pregnancy and editor mentions that Katia moved to Los Angeles earlier this year and is expecting a daughter soon (at the time of publication) in her response.
• Page 22 - A feature on partnerships devotes one page to G&G mainly quoting parts of My Sergei and included is a photo of the final pose from Moonlight Sonata.
• Pages 66-67 - An article about Scott Hamilton's final SOI show includes Katia's words from the finale and a photo of her hugging Scott.
• Page 79 - A news brief about southern California skaters mentions that Katia gave some tips to Sasha Cohen for her ribbon routine.

The 2000 "A Golden Moment" Show will be reaired on the FOX Family Channel later this month. This show originally took place last October and Katia skated to Beautiful sung live by Jennifer Paige. Be sure to watch one of these broadcasts if you missed the first one last fall!

The latest (August 2001) issue of International Figure Skating magazine includes a two-page article about the final Stars On Ice show in Portland, Maine. Katia is listed as one of the attendees and she is included in a group photo of past and present SOI skaters. Daria is in a separate photo with Scott Hamilton, Kristi Yamaguchi, and Jojo Starbuck while Katia is also in a photo with Natalia Annenko and Elena Bechke.

The July 9th issue of People magazine (Meg Ryan on the cover) reports that Katia delivered a baby girl, Elizaveta, on June 15th in Los Angeles. Congratulations to Ilia and Katia on your new bundle of joy!

This is old news by now as I'm trying to get caught up from not updating during the past month! The April 30th issue of People magazine featured a one-page article about Katia, revealing that she is expecting a baby daughter in June. Deb Nast, Katia's friend and manager, said that Katia has "found love again" with Ilia Kulik although the two have no plans to marry at this time. A photo of the couple at the final SOI stop in Portland, Maine accompanied the article.

April 13, 2001

On March 3rd, both Katia and Daria spoke at Viktory for Kids, a skating show at the ISCC in Simsbury that benefited children affected by the Chernobyl accident. The latest issue of International Figure Skating magazine (Aleksei Yagudin on the cover) includes the following information about Katia:

• Page 10 - Two "letters to the editor" ask about Katia's SOI disappearance. The editor responds with the reason given in the press release and states that Katia had not confirmed or denied the National Enquirer story that suggested pregnancy.
• Page 17 - Article about Ilia Kulik in which he declined to comment on the National Enquirer article that said he and Katia were expecting a child.
• Page 43 - Divas On Ice article with a color cast photo
• Page 48 - ISCC summer school advertisement with a small photo of Katia wearing her Bachiana dress

The 2000 Grand Slam of Skating (AKA "Pro Super Teams Challenge") is being rebroadcasted over the next few days.  Katia was teamed with Ilia Kulik at this competition that took place last October and her performances of Fosse and Fragile may be included in these broadcasts.  The Family channel broadcast of round 2 is scheduled for Sunday, February 4th, 4:00-5:30 PM and check the listings in your area at ClickTV for additional broadcasts.

       I just recieved my Biography magazine. It mentions Sergei in it. It talks about Scott Hamilton and mentions how his death affected him. It said ".....In november 1995 he was rocked again when his dear friend Sergei Grinkov died on the ice in Lake Placid from a massive heart attack at the age of 28." And later it says..."besides Scott, the current stars headliners include Olympic gold medalists Kristi Yamaguchi and Tara Lipinski, four time world champion Kurt browning,and Ekaterina Gordeeva, who has skated solo since the death of her husband and partner Sergei Grinkov..."
