The G&G International Fan Club would like to thank all the fans who contributed birthday messages to our club's "special edition" Birthday Card to Katia last month. We received emails from people in 8 countries, including the U.S. (at least 26 different states were represented), Canada, Germany, Netherlands, Japan, Taiwan, Philippines, and Ukraine.

We are pleased to inform you that Katia wrote the club a nice thank you note the same day she received the card at ISCC. It reads, in part:

"Thank you all very much for the great idea of sending me all these messages on my Birthday. It is very special to me." She signed it: "Best wishes, Katia."

We will be publishing a scan of Katia's handwritten note and a photo of the card itself (if it comes out!) in the forthcoming issue of the "Grace & Gold" newsletter, and eventually, we hope, on the club's website as well.

G&G are included in the April 2000 issue of Biography magazine (on page 53) as one of the magazine's selections of "Dynamic Duos" -- they're listed right after John & Jackie Kennedy. The paragraph on G&G reads:

Together, this glowing Russian husband-and-wife team were magic on ice, winning two Olympic gold medals in the pairs competition and capturing the hearts of millions. Then, during a 1995 practice session in Lake Placid, New York, Sergei Grinkov crumpled at Ekaterina Gordeeva's side, the victim of a fatal heart attack. He was only 28, she 24, and they had a 3-year-old daughter, Daria. Ekaterina, who went on to immortalize her husband in the bestselling My Sergei: A Love Story, now skates alone, but has said, "I feel Sergei around - on and off the ice."

Katia, Ilia Kulik, Scott Hamilton, Tara Lipinski, and Kristi Yamaguchi appeared on the Donny and Marie show today for a total of four segments. First Scott spoke alone and he was later joined by Tara and Kristi. Katia and Ilia came out for the third segment, but didn't answer many questions. Highlights of Katia on the show:
  • Clips from Katia's ribbon routine (from the Lake Placid show aired on CBS) were shown just before she and Ilia were introduced.
  • When asked if touring is fun, Katia sarcastically responds, "So much fun. We woke up 5:45 this morning. No, we left at 5:45, right (to Kristi)? So much fun to wake up so early."
  • Ilia then talks about the constant travelling so Donny asks if the traveling or skating is more fun. Katia responds, "Skating is the most fun part. Travelling is a little bit fun." A video clip of her landing a double axel in practice is shown.
  • The skaters continued to talk and a few of Katia's words could barely be heard but she is not asked any other questions directly.
  • In the final segment, everyone plays a game of Twister although Katia and Ilia don't know how to play. They catch on and Kristi is the winner.
