December 30, 1999

Katia, Ilia Kulik, Scott Hamilton, Chen Lu, Jenni Meno, and Todd Sand will be on the Target "Dreams Come True" float in the Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year's Day. The float is ordered 12 in the lineup early on in the parade so don't miss the beginning the television broadcasts. Coverage begins on NBC, CBS, and ABC at 11 AM.

December 21, 1999

WFSB, channel 3 in Hartford, will air Holiday Ice Spectacular on Christmas Eve beginning at 7 PM and on Christmas Day at noon. The show took place in Simsbury this past weekend and Katia performed Tango Lesson/Il Postino and the Petrarch Sonnet ribbon routine.

In last night's Vail Figure Skating Festival broadcast on TBS (which was actually taped December, 1998), Katia performed three routines: Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls, Fragile, and Bachiana. There was also a nice profile about her and Daria. Video captures from the broadcast will be added to the site sometime after Christmas. If you missed the show, it will be repeated tonight on TBS.

December 18, 1999

Katia performed in the annual holiday ice show at the ISCC in Simsbury Connecticut on December 17th and 19th. Her routines on both nights were Tango Lesson/Il Postino and the Petrarch Sonnet ribbon routine. The following are photos from the Friday evening show.

Short skating clips of Katia in a commercial for the Vail Figure Skating Festival broadcast were aired on TNT last night during the coverage of the Canadian Open. She was shown skating to Fragile and in practice. The Vail Festival took place last December and will broadcast on TBS Monday, December 20th.

The weekend edition of Extra featured a brief story about Stars On Ice with several short clips from this year's Stars On Ice tour. Screen captures have been added to the Interviews/Other Photos page of the Photo Album. Katia happily said a few words about skating pairs with Ilia. The following is a transcript from the part just about Katia:

Extra: (clip from ribbon routine) Ekaterina Gordeeva isn't taking anything for granted either. (video clip from Vocalise) The Russian-born beauty lost her husband and partner Sergei Grinkov to a sudden heart attack four years ago. (video clip of Katia and Ilia's routine) But with the passage of time comes healing and a budding romance with Olympic gold medalist Ilia Kulik.

Katia: "He said, 'OK, I'm gonna be a pairs skater now.' (she laughs) So now we're gonna skate together."

Target is selling a new Stars On Ice calendar different from the one with Scott Hamilton and Kristi Yamaguchi on the cover. Tara Lipinski is on the front of this one. Tammy Kidd posted the following on the GandGFans mailing list (editted only for the Katia info):

It's dimensions are a little over 11x16. It's a full sheet calendar (i.e. the binding is at the top of the pages, rather than in the middle). The pictures are as follows:

September - Katia (finally! And, Daria's birth month) - shot leaping (much like Scott's) with both legs up under her in her lavendar Umbrellas outfit. Inset photo is of her off-ice up against a tree. Her beauty is breathtaking!

December 3, 1999

Katia performed first at last night's Improv-Ice event to the country ballad Does He Love You sung by Reba McEntire and Linda Davis. She wore a light blue sequined costume. Later, all the skaters were split into two groups to perform an improvised ensemble number. Both groups skated to Espionage by Green Day from the original Austin Powers movie and Katia wore her red "Out of Tears" dress. One highlight from this ensemble was Katia's death spiral with Frank Sweiding. Katia finished second in the USA Network's online favorites poll for the event. Katia is scheduled to perform at the International Skating Center of Connecticut's annual holiday show, Holiday Ice Spectacular, on December 17-18. The shows will take place at 7:30 PM on both nights. Other skaters listed are Elena Bechke and Denis Petrov, Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, Ilia Kulik, and Victor Petrenko.

November 9, 1999

Divas On Ice took place on Saturday evening. Katia performed in the opening cast number to Tom Jones' She's A Lady; a mini-ensemble with Caryn Kadavy and Rosalynn Sumners to Pick Yourself Up sung live by Diana Krall, the new ribbon routine, and Fragile. "Divas" will be aired on NBC in January.

Tracy Marks has posted many photos of Katia from the ISCC's Celebration On Ice. Here is her message a link to the photos:

I just saw Katia at Saturday afternoon's Celebration on Ice and got 32 closeup photos, half of which I'll be posting on my web site at http://www.geocities.com/~webwinds/katia/katia3.htm. Will also be selling them at Ebay under the user name torreyphilemon (I sell my skating photos to pay off my cost of photography and skating shows, which I otherwise couldn't afford) and at Amazon.com under the name tmar. About a dozen are from her new Il Postino number in which she is wearing burgundy and black; another dozen are in a green jester/juggler outfit, doing her ribbon routine (a different costume than you have pictured) and another half dozen are from her entrance and exits. Many are really good photos and very closeup. I had the seat next to the entrance ON THE ICE so I was about 4 feet from Katia every time she entered or left the ice, and I got a few good pictures of her right next to me, waiting to perform. She did a lovely skate....though I liked Il Postine better the juggling ribbon number.

G&G are briefly mentioned in an article about skating in the past two decades. A tiny photo of the opening pose from their 1986 short program is included in a 1981-2000 timeline.

Last night at the first of three ISCC Fifth Anniversary Celebration On Ice shows Katia performed Fragile and her new ribbon routine. The latest issue of the Grace and Gold newsletter reveals that this music is one of Franz Liszt's Petrarch Sonnets for piano (see news below for more information). This show will be broadcasted by a local Hartford television station.

The latest issue of Grace and Gold, the newsletter of the G&G International Fan Club, provides all of the latest news about Katia. Feature articles include Katia's Sun Valley appearance, Grand Slam competition, A Golden Moment photographs, 1985-1987 long program analysis, and the beginning of a "Reflections" series with articles about Fedor Andreev and the Chinese pair Shen Xue and Hongbo Zhao. The latest news additions to International Figure Skating magazine include Katia in the cast list for Divas On Ice. The show will take place in Atlantic City, New Jersey on November 6th and will be televised by NBC on January 8th. The other ladies scheduled to appear are Katarina Witt, Tara Lipinski, Rosalynn Sumners, Chen Lu, Josée Chouinard, and Surya Bonaly.

October 18, 1999

Katia placed fourth at the Masters of Figure Skating on Saturday. She fell twice in the technical program to Night Hawk's Dream and was in fifth and last place. Her artistic program to Fragile was nearly flawless and Katia pulled up to fourth overall. This competition will be televised on TNT November 3rd.

October 15, 1999

Tomorrow, October 16th, Katia will compete at the Masters of Figure Skating in Green Bay, Wisconsin. She will be competing in this ISU-sanctioned open event against Michelle Kwan, Maria Butyrskaya, Angela Nikodinov, and Yuka Sato. The competition will be televised by TNT on November 3rd.

Katia was featured very briefly on Inside Edition tonight. In a story based on the current People magazine article about young windows, scenes from Sergei's funeral and of G&G practicing Moonlight Sonata were shown. Katia did not speak at all and the video of G&G was very brief.

Here are links to several reviews posted on the net from the Grand Slam (aka "Pro Teams Skating Challenge"). On Saturday afternoon, the pro skaters performed one routine and each performed two additional numbers on Sunday night. Katia was paired with Brian Orser and they finished third in team standings.

The October 4 issue of People Magazine has a cover story called "Young Widows Starting Over". Katia is one of the women featured in the article. There's a small photo of her and Sergei on the cover. Her one-page spread includes a photo of Sergei giving her a kiss on the cheek, a photo of her and Daria on the ice, and the section of her and Ilia Kulik holding hands from the picture taken at Paul Wylie's wedding. The article is pretty short, and it includes quotes with Katia, Scott Hamilton, and Deb Nast.

Katia's name has been removed from the list of competitors for the Masters of Figure Skating at the Candid Productions web site. In yesterday's internet chat, she also stated that the only competition she is currently scheduled to compete at is the Grand Slam in Toronto.

September 19, 1999

Katia performed two programs last night at Kristi Yamaguchi's A Golden Moment show. Her first routine was Night Hawk's Dream performed live by Keiko Matsui and her second was the Il Postino number she only performed once last year. The Anyone attend A Golden Moment? thread at FSW has more details from the show. Contrary to what was previously posted here, A Golden Moment will not be televised on ESPN next Monday. A San Jose Mercury News article states that Lifetime will carry coverage on November 7th at 10 PM.

Katia is schedule to compete at the Masters of Figure Skating on October 16 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The other ladies competitors will be Nicole Bobek, Maria Butyrskaya, and Yuka Sato. Read this read at FSW for more details.

The latest issue of Blades On Ice magazine, a special "Skaters of the Century" issue, contains one full page for Gordeeva and Grinkov. The page features a large black and white photo of the final pose from Méditation along with a brief article summarizing their career. The magazine also has a b/w version of the same Skates of Gold cast photo that was the Weekly Photo on this site several weeks ago.

An article on page 44 of the latest International Figure Skating issue details a planned mini-tour for SkateNation rinks called Skate the Nation Ice Spectacular. A portion of the article is posted below:

Tour director David Baden said, "We're going to be producing a series of skating shows starting in September headlined by Brian Orser, Nicole Bobek, Yuka Sato, Rosalynn Sumners, and Ekaterina Gordeeva. The cast will change, but it will be about 10 skaters. We're going to do three shows per market."

The first of those shows will be presented on Sept. 17 and 18 in Lake Grove, NY. Shows are also scheduled for Restin, Virginia; New Rochelle, New York; and Simsbury, Connecticut.

Katia will likely not be skating in the two Lake Grove shows mentioned as they conflict with her appearance at A Golden Moment also scheduled to be held on the 18th.

I found an advertisement in the weekend section of Friday's newspaper for "Holiday Festival on Ice, staring Kristi Yamaguchi, Kurt Browning, Todd Eldredge, Ekaterina Gordeeva, Brian Orser and Many More (cast subject to change)." The show is scheduled to be in Denver, Colorado (University of Denver - Magness Arena) Wednesday, November 10, 1999.

Katia's participation in this event is unconfirmed, but she has appeared in the Holiday Festival On Ice in the past so we can hope!

The fall 1999 issue of Target the Family with Jewel on the cover features a one page article about the grand opening of Target House. Katia is mentioned as one of the contributors with the Sergei Garden and the photo below is included with the article.

Highlights from the latest summer issue of Grace and Gold, the newsletter of the G&G International Fan Club, include the following:

Color photos grace both the front and back covers for the first time. The front cover shows Katia skating with two children from the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

There are several mentionings of Katia and G&G in the latest issue of Blades On Ice magazine. The special "Skaters of the Decade" issue features a paragraph and photo for many of the top skaters of the 1990's including a two-page spread about Gordeeva and Grinkov. Page 22 has a full-page black and white photo from the opening of G&G's 1994 long program and the facing page contains a brief article with a photo of Katia in her red Out of Tears dress. Black and white photos of the two BOI covers G&G and Katia have appeared on are also pictured in the "Blades Timeline" section. Lastly, a short article about the opening of Target House mentions Katia and Sergei's garden with her quote, "Nature has always helped me find peace. It restores my faith and hope. It is so very important to me that Sergei's Garden do the same for families who are struggling through such difficult times."

More news from the G&G International Fan Club:

In confirming Katia's upcoming schedule for the Summer issue of "Grace & Gold," IMG informs me that, as of 6/28, Katia will *only* be skating in the July 31st show in Sun Valley, and *not* the August 7th one anymore. However, Katia is still scheduled to skate in Kristi Yamaguchi's A Golden Moment benefit show in Oakland, CA on Sept. 18th (even though her name currently is not listed on the web page for the event (Kristi, Peggy Fleming and Katarina Witt are the only skaters listed there at the moment).

More Katia news, "exclusive" and otherwise, will be published in the Summer newsletter, which will hopefully be printed and mailed to all current members around mid-July or so.

Katia has been named to International Figure Skating magazine's "25 Most Influential Names In Figure Skating" list for the 1998/99 season. This is the third straight year that Katia has been recognized on this list. Congratulations!

Also in the latest (August, 1999) issue of IFS is an article about Target Stars On Ice. It states that a portion of ticket sales from the tour will benefit Target House and that there will be information kiosks and a Stars On Ice clothing line at the stores.

Katia is listed on the performer list for A Golden Moment, a show organized by Kristi Yamaguchi along with her Always Dream Foundation and Mervyn's department stores. The show will raise money for breast cancer awareness and research, and is scheduled to take place in Oakland, California on September 18th. Keep your eyes opened for the latest Target the Family issue at Target stores (Tiger Woods cover). On page 29 starting from the back of the magazine, there is a new advertisement for 'Katia Sport.' The issue does not have any other information about Katia.

The latest issue of American Skating World (May 1999, Punsalan and Swallow cover) contains a brief article about Katia's Rolex ad campaign with an image of the advertisement. "The ad features the 27-year-old international skating star sporting the gold Rolex Lady Datajust with diamond dial and bezel that she received as a gift from the late Sergei Grinkov while she was pregnant with their daughter Daria," the article says. The new 'Katia Sport' television commercial was aired for the first time on Sunday, May 16. It has been shown several times over the past few days on many different networks. The commercials features Katia and Daria skating and playing on a hillside while light guitar music is played in the background.

The article is entitled "Our Favorite Dynasties" and it is about all the sports teams who have reigned supreme. Number 18 in their list of twenty is title "Russian Pairs Skaters 1965-1999." It says..."In the pat 35 years Russian pairs have won 29 world championships and 10 straight Olympic gold medals. No pair better defined the elegance and discipline of the Russian skaters than the beautiful Ekaterina Gordeeva and her late husband Sergei Grinkov. Harmonious, balletic and effortlessly athletic, this Moscow couple won four world titles and two Olympic golds, capturing the hearts of audiences the world over before Grinkov died of a heart attack at the age of 28." There is a short article accompanied by this photo in the latest issue of International Figure Skating magazine. The article titled "Gordeeva Continues to Sparkle" provides a few quotes from Katia about this year's Stars On Ice tour and that she is ready to tour another year with SOI. The article also mentions the new 'Katia Sport' fragrance and the Rolex print ad. She will be appearing in a third Snowden special which will be taped this summer for a Christmas season broadcast. Katia is also considering competing in the fall.

Extra had a 60 second spot on Ekaterina Gordeeva visiting the Sergei Garden in Memphis, TN today (Friday, April 16 at 12:30 p.m. E.S.T.)

It looked wonderful. She was visiting several children at the hospital and she told of this being her first opportunity to see it and how wonderful it looked.

There was a donation of $20,000 given to the Children's Hospital from Ekaterina Gordeeva and Target (it looked like). I am sure that she visited the Sergei Garden on Tuesday - around the time of her book signing for Target.

The Sergei Garden had a large picture of Sergei.

Yesterday (April 6th), Katia was on Jeopardy again to give a video daily double clue. The question was about a group that shared a common bond with the city where she was born. The answer was "Moscow." Thanks, Beth!

Katia did not give celebrity clues on yesterday's Jeopardy Show. She was shown several times in the audience clapping for Scott Hamilton. Scott finished as runner-up to Jody Applegate of the NBC Today Show and won over $14,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Great news for next season! Katia is confirmed to skate in next year's Stars On Ice tour. However, it will no longer be called the Discover SOI show. The tour's new sponsor is Target. The tour will stop in over 60 cities and proceeds from all ticket sales will benefit Target House.

The latest issue of Target the Family magazine (available for free at Target stores) includes an advertisement for the 'KATIA Sport' fragrance and an article about the new scent. The fragrance will go on sale April 4th and the line will include an Eau de toilette cologne, body wash, shower gel, scented candles, exfoliating foot cream, moisturizing body mist, soothing muscle soak, and other products.

Since November, the NBC Today show has been featuring an interview and performance by a figure skater every Friday. On February 26th, Katia will appear on the show and will hopefully skate at the Rockefeller Center rink. Although she has not been skating as much this year as she did during the 1997/98 season, we can all be thankful that Katia has appeared on many talk shows during the past few months!

Katia spent Monday, January 25 in Chicago skating with kids from the Make-A-Wish Foundation during a Stars On Ice "media day"
Scott Hamilton's Jeopardy episode will be televised on March 29. Katia is one of the skaters giving clues during the show.
Katia reports that her back is fine now and that she will consider taking part in some competitions next season.
She will not be skating in this spring's Canadian Stars On Ice tour.
Katia will be doing more advertising for Target and her new fragrance, Katia Sport. Daria will be featured in the ads along with Katia.
Daria will be joining Katia during the Florida leg of the tour (I'll report any Daria sightings at the Tampa show!)

Yesterday Katia appeared on the Donny and Marie show along with Ilia Kulik and Tara Lipinski. Images from the show can be found here. Here are highlights from the questions Katia answered:

Katia and Ilia went skydiving on their day off on the day prior to the taping of the show. Katia said, "it was amazing," and that both want to do it again.
Marie asked about the fragrance and Katia present some cream and soap to her. Katia added another plug for the new 'Katia Sport' which will be coming out in the spring and mentioned she is proud of her fragrance line.
When asked what the highlight of the tour is, Katia said "Ilia and Tara" because of the freshness and excitement they add to the tour as new pros.
Lastly, Donny and Marie asked about Scott Hamilton. All the skaters said that he is wonderful to work with and Katia added that he makes sure everyone on tour is taken care of.

While she joked about being on Jeopardy during Howie Mandel Show interview, it appears that Katia will in fact appear on the game show. According to an article at the SOI web site, Scott Hamilton will appear as a celebrity guest and Katia will be one of the SOI skaters giving clues. The show will be televised sometime in February.

Katia performed two routines at the annual holiday show in Simsbury last week. On Thursday, she performed her new routine Fragile followed by Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 and on Friday, she reversed the two routines. Photos from both of these routines are now posted to the Photo Gallery.

A two-minute behind-the-scenes segment was shown on the television show Extra last night. Brief clips showed Katia skating in the clown ensemble and performing to Fragile, and more lengthy clips from last year's Stairway to Heaven finale were shown. Katia said only a few words about how she doesn't know how the choreographers come up with new ideas for the tour each year. Video stills from this feature along with images from Sunday's Stars On Ice broadcast will be added to this web site early next week.

Katia Gordeeva headlines the I.C.E. (Ice Concert Extravaganza) show in Nashville, Tennessee this weekend. Tickets are still available through Ticketmaster for this two day show held on Saturday, December 12 at 8 pm and Sunday, December 13 at 4 pm. Sponsored by the Nashville Figure Skating Club it will be held at the Municipal Auditorium and will feature on-ice performances by the Nashville Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Paul Gambill.

"We will have 47-50 musicians on the ice depending on the numbers," said Bill Fauver who co-directs this show with his wife, Laura Sanders along with Gambill. "I got to know Katia when we were both with Stars on Ice and our local skaters are very excited to perform in the same show with her," he said. Local athletes who qualified for the 1999 US Championships or the 1999 Junior Olympics at the 1999 Midwestern Sectionals and will also perform include: Wesley Campbell (Intermediate Men), Casey Niemeier & Jeb Gerth (Junior Pairs) and Christy Connally & Kevin Donovan (Senior Pairs). "The kids competing at Easterns (sectionals) with Laura will return from that competition Saturday morning for rehearsals and that evening's show," said Fauver.

Many new Stars On Ice specials will be televised this month in addition to the tour broadcasts by TBS and NBC. On December 13th, E! will air an hour-long special with behind-the-scenes footage. Special Holiday Performances at the International Skating Center of Connecticut (Simsbury, CT- December 1) National, World and Olympic Figure Skating Champions Ekaterina Gordeeva, Victor Petrenko, Yuka Sato, Jason Dungjen , Elena Bechke & Denis Patrov, Evgenia Shiskova & Vadim Naumov and special friends perform at the International Skating Center of Connecticut (ISCC) in Simsbury in the SNET Holiday Ice Spectacular, their third annual holiday show.

There are three shows scheduled: Thursday, Dec. 17 & 18 at 7:30 pm and Saturday, Dec. 19 at 2:00 pm. Seating is limited. The SNET Holiday Ice Spectacular will be broadcast as a prime-time special by WFSB TV 3 on Sunday, December 20 at 8 pm.

The SNET Holiday Ice Spectacular marks the return performances of World Champion Yuka Sato to the ISCC. Sato helped open ISCC, performing in the grand opening show in March 1995. As a special holiday treat, Sato will also team up with two-time US National Pairs Champion, Jason Dungjen. Dungjen won two pair titles with former partner, Kyoko Ina.

"The SNET Holiday Ice Spectacular is one of a series of ISCC skating shows that bring together the best skaters in the world to the imtimate setting of the International Skating Center of Connecticut," said Bob Young, World & Olympic Coach and ISCC Executive Director. "The ISCC holiday show has become a much anticipated holiday tradition that has drawn skating fans from as far away as Florida."

Tickets are $29.50 -$39.50 and are available at the ISCC and through all Ticketmaster locations. Group seating is available. All seats are within 10 rows of the ice. ISCC is located at 1375 Hopmeadow Street (Route 10) in Simsbury. For more information about this show call (860) 651-5400.
