This event had a very unique format to say the least. Skaters first performed a Long Program followed by a Short Program the following day. After these two programs, the top two teams skated head-to-head for the gold and silver medals as did the third and fourth teams for the bronze medal and fourth place. The pairs performed another Long Program for this final round that was required to be different from the first one. Skaters below fourth place did not skate a second Long Program. All previous results were then dropped and final standings were determined by the outcomes of the two final pairings.

Since B&S were fourth after the first two programs, they were in the second pairing for the final round skating against Petrova and Tikhonov for the bronze medal and fourth place. Their marks were compared only to those of P&T.
